Social media is – by definition – social. We post out content, talk to others and grow our audiences and community. It stands to reason, then, that this may appear like an easier thing to do if you are in a ‘fluffy’ industry. And by fluffy, I mean a cool, fun, active one.
The truth is, though, that there are many businesses that won’t necessarily fit under the ‘fluffy’ umbrella, and that’s perfectly ok. This may especially be the case if you’re in a B2B business, or perhaps a mix of both B2C and B2B. It’s important that we remain professional and appropriate to our audiences when on social media, but we should also be engaging and interesting to build an audience.
There are many ways you can make your ‘dry’ industry a little more fun when it comes to social media, and one way of doing this is through Twitter trends. On your homepage from a laptop or desktop, your trends will appear on the left-hand corner – keep your eye on them!
For instance, there was recently a #BringYourDogToWorkDay trend on the Twittersphere, allowing businesses and people of all kinds to get involved! Twitter was then laden with cute pups with ties and glasses on, as you can imagine. It was a bit of a fun and got a lot of people talking! Plus, there’s a plethora of other hashtags and trends to get involved in that will be specific to your target audience, industry and network. Be sure to monitor Twitter to see what you can get involved with!
What’s great about these trends is that people will find you (providing you use the right hashtag), and you can also find other people or businesses who may be relevant to you and strike up a conversation or engage in their activity. As Twitter is, by nature, quite a ‘fun’ platform, you don’t need to be so concerned with your content looking out-of-place or inappropriate. Get involved, get the conversation going and see where it takes you!
